Chiefly correspondence and business records but also contains legal and financial papers, writings and speeches, clippings, printed material, and pictures (chiefly 1912-1933), and primarily relating to the Southgate and Jones families of Durham, N.C., as well as genealogical material concerning these families and the interrelated Jeffreys and Wynne families. Individuals and activities particularly highlighted include James Southgate Jones, President of the North Caroline Joint Stock Land Bank of Durham, and Mattie Logan Southgate Jones, President of the Durham Equal Suffrage League and the Durham Civic Association. Other individuals, Durham businesses, and organizations represented include James Southgate, James Haywood Southgate, Gertrude Weil, Thomas D. Jones, J. Southgate and Son, Southgate Jones and Company Real Estate, Standard Mutual Life Insurance Company, and Durham Lodge No. 352. Contains portraits of various family members and late 19th and early 20th century views of Durham, N.C. represented by tintypes, daguerreotypes, cartes-de-visites, and lantern slides; correspondence from family members serving with the 1st North Carolina Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War; and a series of travel letters (1909-1910) primarily pertaining to New Mexico. Addition (2009-0020) (1800 items; 4 lin. ft.; dated 1910s-1993 and no date) contains materials from the Southgate Jones Jr.'s involvement in the Durham revitalization project (1950s), the United Fund of Durham (1960s-1990s), and the family's ownership of a molybdenum mine in North Carolina (1950s-1970s). Also included are fire insurance records (organized by street, 1960s-1970s), oversized panoramic photographs of insurance agents meetings (1910s-1920s), three large maps of the molybdenum mine area, and a scrapbook celebrating J. Southgate and Son Inc.'s 75th anniversary of business in 1947. Accession (2010-0086) (5 items; 2.0 lin. ft.; dated 1896-2008) includes scrapbooks from the political and insurance career of James H. Southgate, dated 1896-1916; typed and handwritten versions of Southgate Jones' autobiography; and a spiral bound volume containing the autobiography of Southgate Jones Jr., dated 2008. Accession (2011-0091) (1 item, 0.2 lin. ft.; undated) is a early- to mid-twentieth century cookbook owned by Mrs. Mattie Logan Southgate Jones, comprising handwritten recipes, many obtained from family members and friends.
